MC: How long were you by your self in Beijing? [The term she used here is bei3 piao1, which is kind of a slang term for a time of hardship for someone who travels by themself to Beijing and try to make it big or just survive.]

HG: For a year.

MC: So what was the worst experience you had?

HG: It was probably when I worked in the bars, and when I would dance in front of shops. I had just graduated then. I just wanted to survive; after this meal, I would think about the next meal. After I finished one job, I had to take on another job because I didn’t have food the next day. That’s what I thought about. So at that time, I didn’t think about dance as an art, like I’m going to do it for the sake of art. I couldn’t even fill my stomach; what art? It was just for money. After I got to South Korea, they told me I didn’t need money. And they would give me pocket money every month. The place I stayed in was also alright, three to a room, a lot better than when I would live in the dorms with eight to a room. So they took care of food and lodgings and gave me pocket money every month. I would save the pocket money and send it back to my mom and my dad. It was like that. It felt like I had an income. I just thought go for it, and after a while, I can earn some money and slowly make life better at home. So just little by little, fighting this way, fighting that way, all
the way until now. Just like that. ©
